This is the tenth volume in The Mineral Statistics of the United Kingdom series and continues the coverage of Central and North Wales. It gives details of the output, ownership, management and employment at several hundred mines, mainly around the lead districts of Halkyn and Minera mountains. The data provides an invaluable aid to the interpretation of surviving site remains and the bookâs use as a field guide is facilitated by the addition of modern Ordnance Survey Grid References. The only volume currently to be available on this nationally important mining area, it provides a brief overview of the development of metal mining from the eighteenth century to modern times and essential material for future research.

This book is the result of a research project on environmental behaviour of sediments. It represents one of the most comprehensive programs in the field of chemical and biological interactions of toxicants in sediments. It also provides valuable insights into the actual international state of sediment quality assessment and discusses various chemical and biological approaches to sediment toxicity. The understanding of interactions of toxic substances in sediments and of conditions controlling mobilization, transfer and bioavailability can be used to predict environmental fates and effects of chemicals. This new book provides valuable information to governmental administrations, technical advisers and research institutions dealing with the management of contaminated sediments.

The abundance of carefully prepared microdrawings of rock types and textures was a feature that maintained the demand for Harker's 1954 text Petrology for Students as a guide to the study of rocks in thin slices under the microscope. This 1978 successor makes Harker's microdrawings, together with over 60 further ones, available in an original petrographic text, amplifying the coverage to embrace rock types whose importance had increased since Harker's work was published. Three sections cover igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The igneous section emphasises the use of chemical and mineralogical characteristics in the description of igneous rocks, whilst the sedimentary section covers each major sediment class, describing how to recognise and interpret individual rock constituents. The metamorphic section summarises metamorphic reconstitution and discusses the metamorphic facies classification. Each section uses the terminology and treatment resulting from specialisation in the three different types of rock.

This book describes the structure-property-composition relationships for silicate glasses and melts of industrial and geological interest. From Antiquity to the 20th century, an introductory chapter presents this subject in a historical perspective. Basic concepts are then discussed in three chapters where attention is paid to the glass transition and its various consequences on melt and glass properties, to the structural and physical differences between amorphous and crystalline silicates, and to the mutual relationships between local order, energetics and physical properties. With pure SiO2 as a starting point, compositions of increasing chemical complexity are successively dealt with in a dozen chapters. The effects of network-modifying cations on structure and properties are first exemplified by alkali and alkaline earth elements. The specific influence of aluminum, iron, titanium, and phosphorus are then reviewed. With water, volatiles in the system COHS, noble gases, and halogens, the effects of volatile components are also described. The last chapter explains how the results obtained on simpler melts can be applied to chemically complex systems. In each chapter, physical and chemical properties are described first and followed by a review of glass and melt structure. When possible, pressure effects are also considered. *From SiO2 to complex silicate compositions, the physical and chemical properties of melts and glasses of geological and industrial interest*Structural characterization of melts and glasses, from ambient to high pressure and temperature*From basic concepts to an advanced level, a consistent description of the structure-property-composition relationships in glasses and melts

Principles of Metamorphic Petrology provides a modern introduction to the latest ideas, techniques and approaches in the study of metamorphic rocks. The book begins with basic concepts, but advances further than most other metamorphic petrology texts. Examples of this include the latest chemographic approaches, the correct use of pseudosections and the application of x-ray compositional mapping to metamorphic problems. It also covers recent advances in thermobarometry and the application of modern geochronological techniques to the absolute timing of tectonometamorphic events. Determination of parent rocks is covered in detail and there is a modern exposition of partial melting reactions, melt extraction and deformation of migmatites. The book includes a large number of references to lead students into independent investigation. A valuable text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in metamorphic petrology, that serves as the most current reference for researchers and exploration geologists.

This latest volume in the second edition of Rock-Forming Minerals deals mainly with the amphiboles, but sections have been added on deerite, howieite andmultiple-chain silicates (biopyriboles). In the years since the first edition, the quantity and scope of research on amphiboles and relate minerals has grown enormously and has given rise to a wide variety of literature. This book, which has been completely re-written and greatly expanded, summarizes the important research results and presents them in an organized fashion. Each chapter is headed by a brief tabulation of mineral data and a sketch showing optical orientation, and concludes with full references to the literature. Diagrams of the crystal structures are presented and followed by discussion of the structural features, making use of data from spectroscopic as well as diffraction experiments. The chemical sections include over 550 analyses from which structural formulae have been calculated, illustrating the range of chemical and paragenetic variation exhibited by each mineral; also the results of P-T experiments, thermochemical and computer modelling techniques. The sections on optical and physical properties include much information gained by electron microscopy and also by deformation studies. The principal modes of occurrence are described in the paragenesis sections emphasizing correlations with chemistry. Rock-Forming Minerals is a standard reference work for professionals in mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry, as well as having a wide appeal as a reference work for postgraduate research students and research workers in related fields.
