Volcanoes of the Solar System

Space age lunar and planetary missions offer a new and enlarged perspective on volcanism, extending our experience to features discovered beyond this planet. Starting with Earth, Volcanoes of the Solar System takes the reader on a guided tour of the terrestrial planets and moons and their volcanic features. Lunar lava fields are seen through the eyes of the Apollo astronauts, and we are taken on an imaginary hike up the Martian slopes of Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano of the Solar System. This comprehensive and lucid account of volcanoes includes over 150 photographs. The text describes the most recent data on the unique and varied volcanic features of Venus and updates our knowledge on the prodigiously active volcanoes of Io. This book is accessible to the general reader, yet includes enough detail to serve as an introduction for earth sciences students.

Volcanos & Earthquakes (Sequences of Earth and Space)

Have you ever noticed the continents of Africa and South America could fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle? If so, you're not alone. Did you know that goes a long way to explain where volcanos come from? What happens deep beneath the earth's surface to why earth quakes happen and what volcanos have created.

Theoretical Aspects, Volume Part A: Third revised and enlarged edition (

This is the third edition of Part A of Seismic Migration - now widely recognized as an authoritative, thorough treatment of seismic migration theory and methods. In previous editions, the emphasis has been on migration techniques based on the one-way wave equations. Nowadays, however, two-way wave-equation-based techniques are receiving increasingly more attention in the seismic literature and it is expected that two-way migration software will play a vital role in the future. In this new edition, therefore, Professor Berkhout devotes an equal amount of attention to one-way and two-way techniques. In chapters 5 to 12, all subjects are discussed according to the one-way and two-way approach, and the results are related to each other.Considering the growing importance of pre-stack migration in the seismic industry, ample attention has been paid to the theory of multi-dimensional pre-stack inversion. In particular, pre-stack migration has been treated in the shot-receiver space as well as in the midpoint-space. Again, results are related to each other. Chapter 11 is a completely new chapter and contains material on multi-dimensional inversion techniques based on the inverse scattering approach. A matrix formulation is derived and the close relationship with seismic migration is discussed.

Elastic Waves in Random Media: Fundamentals of Seismic Stratigraphic Fil

This book treats various generalizations of the classical O'Doherty-Anstey formula in order to describe stratigraphic filtering effects. These are the effects that can be observed when elastic and electromagnetic waves propagate through multilayered structures. Our aim was to treat this topic in a comprehensive manner and present compact results in a didactically simple way, emphasizing the physics of the wave-propagation phenomena. We do not claim mathematical rigidity in all our derivations, however, we are pleased to have obtained quite simple descriptions of scattering, transmission and reflection of wavefields in acoustic, elastic, and poroelastic media which can be useful for various seismological and non-seismological applications.
