The book addresses scientists and technical experts who have already some background knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and who want to know more about standardisation in GIS, in particular, the role of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In addition, the monograph meets the needs of programmers who are involved in implementing ISO 19100 standards and who need a better understanding of the overall structure of the standards. Last, but not least, this richly illustrated book helps readers to better understand the rather abstract ISO documents.

"AutoCAD Map 3D 2011: Raster Images" is one complete topic from our popular book of AutoCAD Map tutorials, "Digging Into AutoCAD Map 3D 2011 - Level 1 Training" in the Kindle format. We have separated the book into sections, taking an "a la carte" approach, allowing you to select just the topics you are interested in or need at the time.Raster images can be used in drawings as backgrounds to provide additional detail to a map. Aerial photographs and satellite images are common types of raster images used in Civil, Survey, and GIS drawings. Many raster images are typically oriented to their correct coordinate systems, a process known as correlation. Correlation data indicates where the image should be placed within a coordinate system, and at what scale factor. The AutoCAD Map 3D Image Insert command can interpret this correlation information and use it to automatically place the image in the drawing at the precise location. In this Kindle book, you will insert an image with and without correlation information, to compare the difference. You will also learn to manage images by controlling the display order, adjusting and fading the image, and clipping the image to create a new boundary.

This book summarizes our present understanding of the formation of passive continental margins and their oceancontinent transitions. It outlines the geological, geophysical and petrological observations that characterize extensional systems, and how such observations can guide and constrain dynamic and kinematic models of continental lithosphere extension, break-up and the inception of organized seafloor spreading. The book focuses on imaging, mapping and modelling lithospheric extensional systems, at both the regional scale using dynamic models to the local scale of individual basins using kinematic models, with an emphasis on capturing the extensional history of the Iberia and Newfoundland margins. The results from a number of other extensional regimes are presented to provide comparisons with the North Atlantic studies; these range from the Tethyan realm and the northern Red Sea to the western and southern Australian margins, the Basin and Range Province, and the Woodlark basin of Papua New Guinea. All of these field studies, combined with lessons learnt from the modelling, are used to address fundamental questions about the extreme deformation of continental lithosphere. Also available: Mesozoic Sub-Continental Lithospheric Thinning under Eastern Asia - ISBN 1862392250 Deformation of the Continental Crust: The Legacy of Mike Coward - ISBN 1862392153 ANALOGUE AND NUMERICAL MODELLING OF CRUSTAL-SCALE PROCESSES - ISBN 1862391912The Geological Society of LondonFounded in 1807, the Geological Society of London is the oldest geological society in the world, and one of the largest publishers in the Earth sciences. The Society publishes a wide range of high-quality peer-reviewed titles for academics and professionals working in the geosciences, and enjoys an enviable international reputation for the quality of its work. The many areas in which we publish in include:-Petroleum geology-Tectonics, structural geology and geodynamics-Stratigraphy, sedimentology and paleontology-Volcanology, magmatic studies and geochemistry-Remote sensing-History of geology-Regional geology guides

In May 12, 2008, the Wenchuan County earthquake caused devastating loss of human life and property. Applying all the remote sensing technology available, the Chinese Academy of Sciences immediately launched into action, making full use of its state-of-the-art facilities, remote sensing planes, and satellites to amass invaluable optical and radar data. This unprecedented use of comprehensive remote sensing techniques provided accurate, up to the minute information for disaster management and has left us with a visually stunning and beautiful record that is as much a scientific achievement as it is an artistic one. Based on the accumulated data and images collected by the Project Team of Remote Sensing Monitoring and Assessment of the Wenchuan Earthquake, Atlas of Remote Sensing of the Wenchuan Earthquake documents the events as they happened in real time. The book covers the disaster from six aspects: geological, barrier lakes, collapsed buildings, damaged roads, destroyed farmland and forests, and demolished infrastructure. It also demonstrates that the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, which has been standing for 2000 years, remains fully functioning, and keeps the Chengdu Plain operating optimally even after the earthquake. Translated into English for the first time, the Atlas presents a pictorial summation of this unique project. It chronicles the event with over 280 before and after color images from a range of perspectives. This volume dramatically demonstrates the value of remote sensing for understanding how an earthquake unfolds and the potential of remote sensing in helping coordinate emergency relief. A pictorial record of events as they unfolded, this book provides a systematic documentation of earthquake damage that can be used to prepare for future seismic events.

This comprehensive cartographic history gives an account of the geographic intelligence available to the British army in the nineteenth century. Through nearly 1,600 contemporary maps, plans, views, and drawings, Intelligence Revealed provides, for the first time, an aggregate listing of the cartographic records produced by the Quartermaster General’s Office, the Topographical and Statistical Depot (later the Topographical Department), and the Intelligence Branch of the British military. The material presented covers intelligence related to major conflicts, lesser-known wars and actions, expanding colonial and overseas interests, and domestic security concerns. Among the nearly thirty conflicts that are mapped in this book are the Peninsula Campaign, the Crimean War, and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78. This essential primary resource material for nineteenth-century historians is accompanied by an extensive illustrated introduction that provides a survey of the administrative and institutional context of military mapping at this time.

At the turn of the sixteenth century, princes and navigators presided over a geographical revolution that fundamentally altered the way people viewed the world. Focusing on the great traveller and map maker, André Thevet, Lestringant examines the audacity of the cosmographer, who rivaled God in the creation of new worlds. Accused of blasphemy and mocked for his encyclopedic aims, Thevet is a wonderful example of how knowledge was transformed during the decline of the Renaissance.Lestringant describes Thevet's mapping of a Brazil of Amazons, cannibals, and kings. He describes how French colonialists' experience with the Tupinamba Indians gave rise to the myth of the noble savage. He discusses the European acceptance of the image of the naked cannibal at a time of religious and social crisis. Mapping the Renaissance World is a brilliant account of the part played by the French in the conquest of the New World.
